WoW: an AI agent cleared the orc start zone blind

A language model finished every quest in the Valley of Trials in 40 minutes with 0 deaths, without a game window open, on a private server.

An orc stands still by a torch at night while cold blue strings of light run down to his shoulders and a glowing line marks a route on the ground.

An AI agent has played World of Warcraft without ever seeing the game. The developer behind agent-wow, an open-source platform for letting language models play WoW, gave OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra a single instruction — create an orc character and complete all quests in the starting zone — and the model finished in 40 minutes with 0 deaths. It started as a level 1 orc, did every quest in the Valley of Trials and ended the run in Sen'jin Village.

What makes it unusual is how the agent played. It does not look at the screen and does not press keys: there is no game client running at all. Instead it speaks the game's network protocol directly, reading world state off the wire and writing movement and ability commands back. The developer says agent-wow deliberately defines no gameplay of its own — no movement, no combat, no interactions — and only gives agents a module system to build whatever they need.

The agent also read the server's own files. It pulled quest requirements, quest givers, turn-in NPCs and spawn coordinates out of the database and used them to plan the order of the quests, finish prerequisite chains, sell junk and equip upgrades along the way. The developer calls that the obvious strategy in hindsight.

Two limits are worth keeping in view. None of this happened on a live realm: the runs are on private local servers built on AzerothCore, the open-source server software for WoW 3.3.5a, the last build of Wrath of the Lich King. And a starting zone is the easy part of the game — the developer's stated goal is to fill a server with agents and see whether they can clear Icecrown Citadel on heroic, which is a very different problem.
