On 22 September Blizzard published tables showing which races can play which classes in WoW Forever, together with the racial traits of every race. There are 9 classes: Druid, Hunter, Mage, Paladin, Priest, Rogue, Shaman, Warlock and Warrior. Among the new combinations, Blizzard names Orc Mages, Troll Warlocks, Undead Paladins, Human Hunters, Gnome Priests and Dwarf Shamans. Alongside them comes the Skyborne, a new race that can join either faction.

On the Horde side, Orcs can be Hunters, Mages, Rogues, Shamans, Warlocks or Warriors; Tauren can be Druids, Hunters, Shamans or Warriors; Trolls can be Hunters, Mages, Priests, Rogues, Shamans, Warlocks or Warriors; and the Undead can be Mages, Paladins, Priests, Rogues, Warlocks or Warriors. On the Alliance side, Humans can be Hunters, Mages, Paladins, Priests, Rogues, Warlocks or Warriors; Dwarves can be Hunters, Paladins, Priests, Rogues, Shamans or Warriors; Gnomes can be Mages, Priests, Rogues, Warlocks or Warriors; and Night Elves can be Druids, Hunters, Priests, Rogues or Warriors. That makes the Undead the only Horde race that can be a Paladin, and Dwarves the only Alliance race that can be a Shaman.

The Skyborne come in 2 versions, and the player picks one when creating the character. Windshapers join the Horde and can be Druids, Hunters, Rogues, Shamans or Warriors; the High Order joins the Alliance and can be Druids, Hunters, Mages, Rogues or Warriors. Both can Walk on Air, gliding downward for 10 seconds, and both have 1% more Haste and deal 5% more damage to Elementals. Windshapers also get Skysight, which adds 10% run speed, while the High Order gets Read Ley Line, which activates a ley line for 100% more Health and Mana regeneration. Access to the race comes with Blizzard's optional paid upgrades for Forever, starting with the Skyborne Heroic Pack. The choice of version also sets the character's faction, and on the PvP ruleset a player can only create characters of a single faction.

Blizzard lists 4 traits for each race, 2 of them marked as passive. It says some traits were updated for Forever to suit the wider class choice and give each race a stronger identity, but it does not list which ones changed. Orcs get Blood Fury, which raises Attack Power and Spell Power by 10% for 15 seconds. Humans get Perception, which reveals stealthed enemies for 20 seconds, and Humans using swords get 2% more critical chance with spells and abilities. Dwarves get Stoneform, which gives immunity to bleeds, poisons and diseases and reduces physical damage taken for 8 seconds. Gnomes get Eureka!, which makes the next 3 spells or abilities cost less and adds 10% to their damage or healing. Tauren get Cultivation, which grows bonus herbs that can be gathered without Herbalism.
